rate well: reachin' (a new refutation of time and space)

there's something about sunday mornings that makes me wanna just cool out and listen to some jazz or mellowed out hip hop.

the currently rotating in my room on this sunday morning is the 'Reachin'' LP from the digable planets. one of the most slept on and underrated albums in hip hop, i feel. cop your copy to listen to before church, to clean your house to or just to cruise around the block to.
buttah.

i got my first pair in june and ever since then, i've been hooked. last friday on my birthday, the second pair arrived -- my nike free 7.0s that were customized by me!!!
i did color schems, details and even tagged it with my name.
pretty sweet deal, if you ask me; they were thirty bucks cheaper to customize than if i bought a raw pair in the store.
shall a third pair of the same show be purchased soon? it's the best and most functional training shoe i've ever had on.

a new blog that i came across just now is kind of sick and twisted.
i guess that's why i like it and i guess that's why i'm their latest fan and i guess that's why i'm adding them to my roll call along my links sidebar to the left.

whether you send them or recieve them, we all love postcards.
PostSecret is a blog that has uploaded postcards with personalized messages on them. some are sarcastic, some are cynical, but to me, it's all hilarity. i'll be swinging by there every now and then. you should too.

tk + rachel
tonight was the 2nd last episode of the amazing race's season 12.
being asian myself, theoretically, i'm supposed to be going for the asian team -- the daughter and father. fuck that.
in actuality, i'm living vicariously through the hippie backpacker couple, tk and rachel.

i'm so glad nate and jen are out of it; i was so fed up with her whining and bitching.

next week's the finale and next week someone's gonna get $1M. let's hope it's tk and rachel.
i love their balance, modesty and plain gatdamn coolness.

where can i find me a rachel??...she's the protoype to the mother of my children.

my nike frees
i've been a professional trainer for what?...9 or 10 months now? anyhow, when i started out, i bought a pair of shoes that i felt fit the part. little did i know that my particular shoe is the champion's choice of footware for off-season athletes and strength and conditioning coaches, worldwide; i just thought they were a cool concept and mad fly.

the other day i was hunting through the jungles of the footlocker's and champs and athelte's worlds to see if they still had the 7.0 in stock. they did and still do. but why the same price tag? i mean it's been months since they were thrown on the shelves. where's the justice in canada for a dude looking to cop another pair of nikes?

frustrated, i headed home and started looking online. as expected, shoes, like cars, are cheaper in the u.s. than here in canada. go figure. i went to nike ID and starting customizing my own nike free. at first it was just a means of daydreaming and seeing what my favourite work shoe might look like. then it got out of hand. i started messing with different color swatches, swoosh colors, symbols. shoot, i even threw my initials on their so my imaginary clients could remember who their trainer was as they kissed gym floor while doing push-ups. i immediately fell in love the custom i made and figured i had to order them. had to. too bad they're unshippable to canada, i thought to myself.

i'll leave this post open-ended because, hopefully, all fingers crossed, i'll be able to bring my babies to canadian soil and onto my feet where they belong. let me know what you think after the drop.
and don't worry abs and jd, i'm not even considering asking you to ship these out to me, no matter how much i'd pay you. shipping through a particular hookup shall be FREE.

what ever happened to t.v.?
more specifically, what ever happened to the sitcom?

we have more than 300 channels here but nothing is really worth watching nowadays. aside from my travel shows, my science shows, my fight network shows, why did all the good sitcoms become extinct? t.v. used to be theatre, just that it was in front of a camera. i write this after watching 'all in the family' a really meaningful sitcom that satirezed bigotry, racism, sexism and what ever 'ism' existed under the sun, not to mention the precursor to 'the jeffersons'. usually the themes dealt with in 'all in the family' were (and still are to an extent) heavy topics to talk about among parents and kids, but the writing and acting behind the show made it light-hearted and pallatable for the average, middle classed, american common-person and his or her family back then and even today. it was plain funny; simple, concise and straight to the point.

i guess "sitcom" can be chalked up on the list as one of those things i pout over as i grow up a little bit more.
those reallywere the days.

rate well:beatphone

since i'm all light sensitive to the morning sun and shit and since i set my alarm this morning to wake up at 8 (on a sunday!!! who does that?) on the count that my neighbour (a professional window guy) is gonna change my bedroom window, i figured i have some time to post before i fall aslep again.

i was checking my iphone installer for the latest updates on what apps are available on my phone. if you're wondering what this entails, think widgets or even programs, games and toys. i came across this new media toy called 'beatphone'; a drum machine for your iphone. it's so rad.

if you can appreciate the beat kings of today's hip hop and even yesteryear's for that matter, who rocked out on the mpc and spc's, and you wanna emulate them during your lunch break or while waiting for public transportation to come get you, then as my cousins in the bay area would say, "you'll have a hella good time" on this. being that i had nothing to do last night, i must've killed the hour between 2 and 3 am fucking with this.

now i can make beats wherever i go....in the toilet, at the mall or even on the subway for that 'urban' feel.
nooooooice!

beatphone includes:
9 one-shot pads,
6 loop-pads
Samples in “any” format : WAV, AIFF, …
Output at 44.1kHz, 16-bits
Up to 256 samples polyphony

thanks, makers of beatphone. i forever will be indebted to you.

rate well: nike dunk hi's (major taylor stylee)
i copped myself some new hops the other week.
for the longest time, i've been dying to cop me a pair of fresh dunk hi's.

mine are ca-ca and curb slime flavour. but what i failed to realize was the fact that there's an actual meaning behind my dunks.
my kicks are a tribute to an old afro-american athlete from the late 1800-early 1900's era (the first internationally acclaimed african american superstar to be exact). i did not know that. all this time i'm rocking my kicks, i just liked them for their looks. show's how superficial i am, eh? *snicker***

major taylor hi dunks by nike -- pretty heavy stuff if you ask me.
i rock mine with the tongue out because i'm buttah like that.

rate well: lacie porsche 500G external HD
i didn't think i'd get here this fast, but prior to yesterday, my iBook was down to it's last 6 gigs of space. considering that i rarely use bit torrent for my download uses, my computer filled up pretty fast. i guess that can be accredited to all the pictures i've taken over the years.

"burning"*snicker**...burning is for suckers.

actually, i just never got around to backing up my data.

so as i mentioned previously, i was driving to the store under the hot august sun. thankfully i arrived at tiger direct before any accidents had time to happen. i've been researching and hunting for a while, but i finally came to my conclusive mindset and purchased lacie's porsche. although not listed on their website, mine is the 500 G version.

now that's a lot of damn space anyone knows that. but for a guy who had a desktop PC with only 12G to begin with and later a jump to 40G on this ibook, a jump to 500G seems like infinity.

on their website, tigerdirect.ca describes the porsche as being able to contain "212 two-hr dvd movies", "186,500 digital photos", and get this - "440 days of around-the-clock MP3 audio". that's a wonderful thing!!

the price for this 500 gig'er?....a gatecrashing $145 CAD!

i'm currently in the process of organizing and moving my mp3s off this computer HD to the lacie and i have to say - it works with ease. the mac easily recognized it and the porsche itself came fresh out the box, quiet like a new born baby. no humming or clicking or spinning noises. it's mac-patible and stackable. what more could i ask for? right..the design -- it's clean in design; silver for that futuristic feel.

i originally wanted the lego brick but it's ok. i think i got my money's worth with this one.
i'm a real working man now, i gotta budget my bucks; you know -- dollar stores, holes in socks and trail mix.
cheap stuff.

lacie's porsche 500G is a definite must-have for all your porn and/or music and/or photography and/or document needs.
get one today. tell'em jay sent you.

shoot, i might even buy another at this price.
(overkill?)

rate well: shaq's family challenge
one thing that gave me shivers down my spine during my undergrad life, was in my 3rd year health promotion lecture. my prof said the following (bolded for emphasis):

"our generation will be the first to bury our kids if we don't change our lifestyles...nutrition and activity."

that shit fucked me up. it's all around us, but we don't think about it. with all of the technological advances, all of the advances in agricultural biotechnology and hence the easily-obtained abudance in (inorganic, man-made, nutrient-lacking, fake) food, bombardment of fast food ads, not to mention the politicians scrapping physical activity programs in the school system, it's a scary time for today's youth. all i had to worry about when i was young was tomorrow's social environmental studies test or whether or not my brother left me the key under the doormat. obesity is prevalent in the U.S., and canada is rapidly taking suit. however, don't for a second think that obesity is something exclusive to adulthood. children don't buy their groceries or pay for their meals when dining out, parents do. beyond that, children mimic their parents - so when mom or dad adds tons of salt or sugar to their food, then kids will do the same. if mom and dad aren't physically active once in a while then why would kids be inspired to do the opposite? then we wonder why kids are getting obese too.

it's one thing to say something's a problem, but it's another thing to do something about it and actually make change. talk is cheap but not for mr. o'neal. shaq's new show, "big challenge" is a breath of fresh air on the tube. during each reality-type episode, shaq is attempting to educate and change the lives of youth not only on the actual program, but for the children and parents watching, just the same. if you get the chance, try and catch an episode on abc tuesday nights; it gets the double thumb-up on my part. the website is pretty informing too.

keep your kids in mind...even if you aren't parents yet, you can start by taking care of yourselves.

kudos to shaq, even if he can't shoot free-throws.

SHAQ ATTAQ!!!
(you know i had to say it)

rate well: cops
as i sit here sipping my own concoction of iced laos coffee, i'm not ashamed to admit it....i watch COPS.

there, i came out.

it's been on the tube since who knows when and it's still going strong. it's hourly slot (before america's most wanted -- another great, long running fox t.v. show) is rarely caught by me on saturday nights, but if i have no saturday night plans, homework or clients, then i'm all over COPS.

talk about reality tv, the show is one of the pioneers. there's something about seeing a hooker, an overweight officer running and weazing, heroin addicts, canines and crack-pipe trailer trash that makes me feel good about myself. it's my hour of (em)power. i hate to mock the human condition but i think that's part of the formula when it comes to COPS' success over the years; people like watching other people live a life of hardship.

if you thought your life was crap, watch COPS, then you'll realize that it ain't so bad. FOX tv -- not the scholarly choice of television programming but entertaining when you need that junk fix for the soul.

rate well: nikefree
i have no qualms with stating how much of a brand whore i am for apple and nike. it's no secret.
with nike especially, you can knock how nikes aren't the perfect running shoe, biomechanically and suggest a new balance or an asics. that's fine.
i'm a kinesiologist, ahem, a certified kinesiologist and i even give their sports science team props.

you can cut them up for exploiting the developing world, and that's fine too.
but i am rooted from the developing world and you can catch me on the street rocking a crisp pair of nikes. you just gotta think on the positive side....it could've been a cousin who made that shoe you're wearing; why would you want to take their job away from them? and who's to say your own cousin can't make a quality product that you can't rely on?

k, now i'm just being sarcastic.

it's been 3 weeks since i copped my new gear for work and i'm still building on my collection. where corporate brass have to wear suits and look all spiffy, i gotta be professional in doing what i do and rock the hi-tech gear. who wants a trainer that wears cotton???? seriously. from dri-fit shorts to thermal warm up jackets, my whole being is a science, mannnnnn!!!

that's where nike comes in. nike never lets me down. i copped a pair of nikefree 7.0s a while back and i've been rocking them during training sessions like a religion.

a famous quote from bruce lee goes:
"Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend."

thinking of nikefree, this quote is more than fitting. the latest studies in my field reveal that an unstable training environment leads to (core) strength and an increased awareness in personal balance (i.e. increased firing of nerve impulses all along your backbone, pouring gravy on your brain - knowutimsayin'???). this is precisely why you see a lot of people using those fitness balls in the gym; they're unstable, making you train your nervous and muscular system indirectly. on top of that, those giant goofy balls make you do more work. the more work you do, the more calories burned - that in itself, my friends, is a perfect science.

perplexed by kenyan athletes who run barefoot during their training sessions, the sport science team at nike headquarters wanted to develop a shoe that mimicked being shoeless. the concept behind nikefree is to be shapeless, formless, and unstable. instability leads to stability. with minimal to no stabalization on the sole of the shoe (except for slight stability found on the lateral and medial aspects of the sole and cushioning on the heel only), the nikefree can make a grown man feel joy through wearing ballet slippers without the blush and embarassment of actually wearing a pair.

"then why not go barefoot", you ask?
because most public places say no shoes, no service. besides, your feet (yes, you!) stink; cover them up with a cool pair of frees that are lined with dri-fit sweat-wisking technology.

"then why not wear ballet slippers?"
because i'd get jumped at the gym.

"but seriously, wear wrestling shoes then"
wrestling shoes have good traction and no stability. good choice, but wrestling shoes lack cushioning. most training requires running, bounding and stepping, wrestling doesn't. nike frees are unstable but that doesn't mean they don't absorb shock. forceful impact tracking from your feet up to your joints to your hip and up along your spine during training is never fun.

i can talk on and on about the shoe but the fact of the matter is the nikefree shoe is a handsome and advanced training shoe. shoot, they've strengthened my lower extremities to the point where i'm cracking open walnuts with my toes. if you want the personal trainer's trainer, then cop a pair, now.

m.m. (outro): "it's oh so quiet" - bjork
a post for dee.

i caught her post today and decided to check out the feist vid she posted. pretty cool. i can appreciate it when directors and musicians collaborate to make good art, especially if they're spins on grand musical productions. makes you pissed when some videos get no play on t.v., doesn't it?

anyhow, while watching her feist presentation, i immediately thought of bjork's "it's oh so quiet" from '95.
both are gold.
shit's fun. plain and simple.

if you're interested in more brilliant pieces of direction, then you'll want to stop by your nearest dvd or music supplier and cop spike jonze's works. i got the dvd 3 years ago for my birthday and it's been on rotate non stop. check it out.

rate well: high times deluxe edition
although they're my favourite band in the galaxy, it's sad to say that i don't own all of their albums (at least legally, anyways).
and i call myself a fan. how dare i?

high times was released back in november here in north america and is a so called "best of" compilation of the band they call jamiroquai. i put off buying it for a while and i'm kind of glad.
in japan, soon to be released this april (hey, that's soon, man!!), the "high times deluxe edition" will be available on amazon.com. it'll be a double CD package containing all things the original high times set had except another CD dedicated to remixes and rarities.

whats more....it has a blue sleeve and album cover with the classic buffalo man icon, money!

we all know how i love my white lables, one-of-a-kinds, limited editions, imports and dead stock.
now that the band has been released from sony - i hope jay kay and the boys come out with some new material.

deluxe edition. faaaaaaaaaat.

peeps: forest whitaker
because some people live lives worth talking about.

i have a new set of eyes and i'm happy about it. if it was even more possible, i give a heavier load of crap about the world around me now than i did prior to 3 months ago (so thaaaaat's why i've been watching a lot of docs, films and news reports dedicated to international crisis). the other weekend i caught independent jawn, the last king of scotland. the film outlines the travesties of idi amin during his rule over uganda in the 70s. check it ouf if you get the chance; 5 out of 5 easily and a "jay-must-purchase".

i've always had admiration for forest whitaker. he's just one of those actors. sure, we all have our hollywood high profilers that we love - the pitts, the cruises, the clooneys, the damons, the nortons etc. but every now and then we each get that particular actor that deems our greatest regard. these are the performers who refine their craft; who actually give a shit about the art.

from "the crying game" to "ghost dog" to "the last king of scotland" and many more, forest whitaker is a phenom. he's either gentle giant or ruthless general -- that's his range and he's always righteous while doing so. he takes his role seriously and immerses you in whatever space, time or place is illuminating the screen.
kudos to forest in making movies worth buying tickets to.

i've been doing a lot of staying at home since summer let out. it's really my attempt at saving some extra "splurge" dollars for the trip. i gotta admit, it's been a hard transition but having the addition of digital cable to our household really hampers the experience.

friday nights have me hooked to the fight network and doc(umentary) channel. tonight however, i was glued to IFC, the indie film channel. i just finished watching "spun", a story about a crystal meth junkie dealing with heartbreak from a previous relationship. heavy, ain't it?

"spun" stars jason scharwtzman, john leguizamo, mickey rourke, mena suvari and brittany murphy. the characters are bizarre and the cinematography is a trip...sort of reminiscent of johnny depp's "fear and loathing in las vegas" except this is in california...i hope. for all you junkies, past, present and recovering, i suggest you give this flick a look.

[spunthemovie.com]

prior to that, i caught "jesus is magic" on the doc channel. it's jewish femme fatale/comedian, sarah silverman's stand-up peppered with skits and musical montages. i have to admit, she's a fucking racist....at least i thought so at first, her humour is very dark and cynical - targeting her own jewish community, blacks, asians, handicaps and anyone breathable. it's all very intellectual though...sorta like chappelle...except not really.

maybe she is racist. wow.

whatever the case, peep "spun" and "jesus is magic" to gain some cool-like-zack points.

so i wanted to buy this book but then i thought about my budget...my very low budget. i borrowed it from the library instead.
before i go on i should note the full title - "living large in small spaces: expressing personal style in 100 to 1,000 square feet"; it's pretty self-explanatory.

the author is marisa bartolucci with photos by radek kurzaj.

i've been looking for some direction and input when thinking about some inspiration for my room's layout. this book proved all my beliefs wrong. the book showcases living spaces all over the world and is divided in sections spanning from 100 SF (sq.ft.) to 1000 SF. prior to reading this text i wanted to go by certain rules that the designing world demands. you see, i want this modern almost scandanvan look for my crib. google that and you'll find numerous pages dedicated to the rules of modern interior design theology.

but like i said earlier, 'living large in small spaces' disproves all of these beliefs. the rooms showcased in that book work. they actually make it happen. and the thing is, although most of rooms and spaces are modern their basis, each owner put their own spin on their crib defying the rules of design. i mean now that i think of it, really...who makes those rules?

now that i'm more informed, my room will be art; not some rip off from a dude named sven with blonde hair.
i'll be able to reflect me through my room (don't go expecting pink elephant imagery and a dorm fridge though).

if you plan on redecorating your room or going through some sort of renaissance, check this book out.

(i'll stop rating using a star system because really, if it ain't good, i ain't gonna rate or criticize it).
cop it now.

i started a post last night and it went like this...
so it's august 23rd; a wednesday. new records hit the stores on tuesdays.
and besides the new outkast album "idlewild", j dilla's 'the shining' was released.

if you're not familiar with dilla then you just haven't been reading this here blog long enough.
it's 11pm and i'm listening to this through my headphones as to not wake anyone - but man, i wanna blast this cd until my windows shatter!

it's 8am and the cd has been on repeat in my headphones since then. that's the thing. i fell asleep but not because the cd is boring, rather, because the sound is so lush.

LUSH.

it's really the only word i can use to describe dilla's sound.
i was gonna do a long winded post about how some 'fans' are dickriders of dilla; basically bandwagon jumpers. i was going to talk about how people only love you when you've passed away. shoot, not everyone was a fan of tupac or biggie while they were walking the earth. the same can be said for hendrix and marley and even elvis, i'm sure.

i was going to do a long winded post about all of that but i won't.

all i have to say about this cd is that it's art. for those of you who never considered hip hop an artform, then you just haven't been listening hard enough. you gotta search for the gems; that's why they're precious.

'the shining' was dilla's last incompleted effort. it was his full intention to release this work and not simply a money making product to capitalize off james "dilla" yancey's death. it features a lot of artists & m.c.'s - well known (pharoahe monch, common, black thought, ?uestlove, dwele, madlib etc.) but what really shines on 'the shining' is the production. it's full of soul.
sorta like a big hug from dilla, himself.

dilla ain't dead - his legacy lives on and hits you right where it matters.
cop this...uhh...like now!

'the shining' - j-dilla
5 stars.
