i started a post last night and it went like this...
so it's august 23rd; a wednesday. new records hit the stores on tuesdays.
and besides the new outkast album "idlewild", j dilla's 'the shining' was released.

if you're not familiar with dilla then you just haven't been reading this here blog long enough.
it's 11pm and i'm listening to this through my headphones as to not wake anyone - but man, i wanna blast this cd until my windows shatter!

it's 8am and the cd has been on repeat in my headphones since then. that's the thing. i fell asleep but not because the cd is boring, rather, because the sound is so lush.

LUSH.

it's really the only word i can use to describe dilla's sound.
i was gonna do a long winded post about how some 'fans' are dickriders of dilla; basically bandwagon jumpers. i was going to talk about how people only love you when you've passed away. shoot, not everyone was a fan of tupac or biggie while they were walking the earth. the same can be said for hendrix and marley and even elvis, i'm sure.

i was going to do a long winded post about all of that but i won't.

all i have to say about this cd is that it's art. for those of you who never considered hip hop an artform, then you just haven't been listening hard enough. you gotta search for the gems; that's why they're precious.

'the shining' was dilla's last incompleted effort. it was his full intention to release this work and not simply a money making product to capitalize off james "dilla" yancey's death. it features a lot of artists & m.c.'s - well known (pharoahe monch, common, black thought, ?uestlove, dwele, madlib etc.) but what really shines on 'the shining' is the production. it's full of soul.
sorta like a big hug from dilla, himself.

dilla ain't dead - his legacy lives on and hits you right where it matters.
cop this...uhh...like now!

'the shining' - j-dilla
5 stars.
