i don't watch business news

but i really should start and if it's rico hizon, i will start.

considering that 70% of my clientele are executives and considering that i have more than a couple friends who work the business bay street sector of toronto in their daily lives, you'd think i'd be more interested in business.

but i'm not.

i came home roughly an hour ago and i couldn't wait to sink my teeth into my mom's chicken adobo. fried and savoury just the way i like it. heavy on the garlic too. as pops and i flipped through the channels, we were stuck on bbc business news featuring rico hizon live from singapore.

it flips my wig when i see asians on tv, especially if it's a north american network. what blew my mind tonight was the fact that a filipino man was on the bbc - an internationally broadcast news feature. all eyes on a pinoy in a suit. not too shabby, rico. i just got all excited i guess. it's not too often we're featured on an international stage i guess. i hope this is much more than a trend. i hope this lasts. if not, it's ok, but until then mr. hizon, im tuning in at 10:30pm EST for your bbc business report. kudos, tito rico. you represent nicely.

the philippine connection to bobby fischer
sure you know him from his badass chess game and yea, he could tear your ass up mentally but nonetheless, a big ol' fashioned r.i.p. goes out to one of our planet's most coveted geniuses and eccentric minds, bobby fischer.

did you know he was connected to us?.....did you know about his philippine romance? or how about the time he consumed 5 balut?!!! yea...i said 5 balut. i can't even consume 1, fuck 5.
oh that bobby....those were the good ol' days.

[why bobby fischer loved RP, filipinos]

"REM sleep is for losers", said the filipino dad
in the army, they often sleep deprive their soldiers. this is usually towards the goal of one part physical conditioning and two parts mental breakdown for eventual brainwashing.

the other day, my dad woke me up DURING A SNOWSTORM to climb a ladder (a freezing aluminum ladder, mind you) and change the Christmas lights that line the roof of my house. The next day, i woke up on my own terms early in the morning to shovel the aftermath of that previous storm. today, my dad woke me up to move an old couch from our living room, down the slippery walkway, along our driveway and onto the boulevard of the street.

filipino dads like to sleep deprive their children. whether through the heavy-footed steps they make downstairs as they wake up at God-knows-what-hour, through the clanging of ceramic dishware for the morning fried egg they cook, or straight up by shaking and waking you from your deep REM sleep, filipino dads are not advocates of proper sleep.

through all of this, i just hope that:
a) my dad is either planning to ship me off to fight terrorism and save the world (yo, joe!!!)
or
b) is gonna get me an m-16 assault rifle for Christmas.

God, i love our new ikea furniture and God, i love the noble-mindedness of my dad.
it's 6am, i'm gonna crawl back into my cocoon.

exoticism written by one who is exotic
i love my females - asian. i ain't no joke, and that's as serious as cancer. filipino, thai, cambodian, laos, chinese, viet, korean......whatever! shoot, let's even throw in some indian in there too...and where my burmese (myanmarians?..to be p.c?) girls at?
but everyone has their "taste". every guy has their choice blends.
i could write here about yellow or asian fever but a rant like that is so three years ago.

i like my asian girls bronzed. tanned. olive skinned. most asian girls wanna be light skinned. pasty. it brings a sort of aristrocratic state of mind to them. have you seen the whitening lotions and soaps available back in the east?
maybe it's part of the whole european ideology of what defines beauty. "maybe"? of course it is. but it stumps it me how whiteys here wanna be so tanned (what the hell??).

however, i'm out the fucking box. you should know that by now so i say fuck that pasty, ill-looking nonsense. if you're meant to be light, be light. likewise if you're dark. i was just wondering though, being that asians are already considered "exotic", those tanned asians must be on a whole'nother level of exotic. but wait a minute, i'm a tanned, bronzed, asian myself so is it really exotic to me if i'm that way?

wouldn't...no, shouldn't exotic to me be someone from russia...or sweden? no wait...greenland. yeaaaa. pasty white skin, blue eyes. clogs and double fists with two giant ass beer mugs. that's exotic. at least to me.

i curse the fucker who ever started that whole "orientalism" + "eroticism" bullshit. look where we are today -- it's "us" and "them". study your history and sociology you might just learn a thing or twenty...and what the heck, let's crack open some anthropology too.
happy reading!

signed,
mr. exotic (himself)

fresh (what's next?): shanghai kiss x 25th san francisco int'l. asian american film festival

i often complain that toronto doesn't have enough asian awareness. every year, i say that i'm gonna go peep the local yearly asian film festival here but i never do. maybe i'm the one lacking in the awareness of asian art and culture around here. maybe i have the problem.

premiering at the frisco film festival this year is shanghai kiss, directed by ken kornwiser and david ren. the romantic comedy (yeah you read it right, even i wanna see a romantic comedy...especially if it's got asians all up in it; a nice change from the typecasting of math/science god, gun-playing gangster, exoticized geisha or kung fu master) stars ken leung and kelly hu (yessss!!!).

the film depicts liam liu (k. leung) as a struggling actor in L.A. who later goes to shanghai only to experience culture shock to the nth degree - causing him to reassess his chinese roots (how's that for a one-lined, hyper-condensed synopsis?).

when the november asian film fest hits t.o. at the end of this year, and if i'm not backpacking again, and if shanghai kiss is playing -- i'll be all up in it. for now, i can only hope that i'll be able to catch it at a local theatre or even on dvd.

shanghai kiss...i need this in my life.

and to all my chinese fam, happy new year.
oink, oink, baby.

Gung hay fat choy (cant.)
and
Xin nian yu kuai (mand.)
"may you become prosperous".

i once had or still have a blog entitled "lapu lapu loves you". through lapu lapu, i wanted to create an ongoing list of everything filipino that affected me.

i wanted to stay positive and keep it real. i wanted to wave my flag high in the sky. i still do, but my urges dwindled. maybe i'll start posting on there again sporadically or in the near future. in the meantime and thankfully, my boy colin has taken the torch and flipped it with his own signature. with my ambitious positives outlined in lapu lapu, you have to realize that there are a lot of negatives that come along with being filipino. in terms of these flaws, im not saying we're all like that because frankly, that'd be a shallow and arrogant view. i am however pointing out that a lot of us do have problems we, as the future leaders of our community (worldwide), have to confront. i can't really speak on colin's behalf but i will assume, his posts are an attempt to point out common practices and flaws we often overlook. so without further ado, drop by, show colin some love and check out his three filipino posts:

1. the churchgoer
2. branded
3. FST (my personal favourite thing i love to hate)

brilliant.

p.s. kuyagimik...how the hell you gonna shutdown shop?!!!
