fresh (what's next?): the brick
put up your hand if you played with lego when you were younger. shoot, put up your hand if you still find yourself playing with those colorful bricks or if you basically spend a good 30 mintues at toys'r'us checking out the new stock from the building block giant.

as i slowly run out of space on my ibook i've been on the hunt for an external hard drive. but i ask...why buy just any external HD? cop "the brick" by lacie.

fresh (what's next?): the iLike community
with so many network community-sites these days, who really needs real-life friends? who wants to hang out with friends in-person?
really.

i'm clowning y'all!!!!!

but just in case you didn't get your fill with asianavenue back in the days, friendster (slowly becoming today's asianavenue) or the current powerhouses of myspace and facebook, then you might wanna peep iLike.

you might be wondering, "why jay? what the F*ck are you trying to pull here? why waste another precious minute browsing the profiles of friends and news feeds or looking at pictures (especially those half-naked ones of vain people where i feel compelled to touch myself once looking at?) why, jay? why?!!"

well i'll tell you why! iLike has the goods, that's why. iLike is different from the above social networks because it plays the role of big brother; iLike is watching you. but of course, all the peeping tomishness is for a good reason and in good fun. the iLike community connects others with similar music that you like.

some features include:
  • seeing which members share similar musical tastes with you (and hence, networking for filesharing, chatting, dating or sex'ing)
  • an iTunes sidebar where you can link out to play perverted voyeur on what your "friends" are listening to and also "recommended artists" similar to whatever tunes are currently playing
  • exposure to new and upcoming artists or artists you've never heard of (and probably would've never heard of in your life)

    keep in mind that you'll need iTunes so iLike can watch you. the site's currently in beta with future plans to connect to your windows media player if you swing that way.

    fresh (what's next?): shanghai kiss x 25th san francisco int'l. asian american film festival

    i often complain that toronto doesn't have enough asian awareness. every year, i say that i'm gonna go peep the local yearly asian film festival here but i never do. maybe i'm the one lacking in the awareness of asian art and culture around here. maybe i have the problem.

    premiering at the frisco film festival this year is shanghai kiss, directed by ken kornwiser and david ren. the romantic comedy (yeah you read it right, even i wanna see a romantic comedy...especially if it's got asians all up in it; a nice change from the typecasting of math/science god, gun-playing gangster, exoticized geisha or kung fu master) stars ken leung and kelly hu (yessss!!!).

    the film depicts liam liu (k. leung) as a struggling actor in L.A. who later goes to shanghai only to experience culture shock to the nth degree - causing him to reassess his chinese roots (how's that for a one-lined, hyper-condensed synopsis?).

    when the november asian film fest hits t.o. at the end of this year, and if i'm not backpacking again, and if shanghai kiss is playing -- i'll be all up in it. for now, i can only hope that i'll be able to catch it at a local theatre or even on dvd.

    shanghai kiss...i need this in my life.

    before we start with this lesson....let it be known that my 25th birthday is less than 2 months away!
    perfecto! with that in mind..here we go......*wink**wink*

    wow, my 300th post.
    special? of course it is...

    so there was another mac show. here's what came about:

    iphone
    i'm not a celly user. shoot, my brother handed me down his mobile a few years back when he got his new engineering job and supposedly needed to be all decked out and cool with his new flip phone. against my wishes, i reaped the benefits and lived out the remaining year of his 3 year contract.

    that's the extent of my relationship with a mobile.
    from my point of view, if you need to reach me, you'll find a way to reach me. trust....

    that's about to change, i think. actually, i know.
    apple came out today with the new iphone.
    talk. listen. watch. surf. touch screen. do whatever. besides...it's an apple.

    nuff said.

    i need that in my life.

    sit back and imagine...

    imagine a roundtable discussion between myself, akira kurosawa, osamu tezuka and the rza. imagine what we'd talk about?...

    i didn't have a chance to mention it but i bought an ipod. not a "true" pod but a shuffle.
    before leaving to thailand i needed my music with me but at the same time, i felt it was time to move away from my sony md and forward towards my ipod.

    i needed a small mp3 player because lugging around a bunch of mds while backpacking isn't the smartest thing to do. i shopped and shopped but as you know, not too many players wanna be compatible with apple. luckily the new ipod shuffle came out a few days before my departure.

    if you ever wanted to backpack thailand or anywhere else in the world or just want a small 1G mp3 player then cop an ipod. it's small enough to not weigh you down and cheap enough for you to not care if you lose it...for instance, dropping it during an elephant ride through a southeast asian forest.

    it has a metal shell too. like you care (i do, though).

    colin filled me in on this....and i know r.j., it's belt-driven. oh boo...i guess i can't be q-bert now.

    everytime i walked through urban outfitters (sorry dee, only in t.dot) i saw this turntable. it was a turntable - no biggie. i had no clue though. i had no clue that it was a USB turntable....a USB turntable capable of turning anything on vinyl into mp3 format.

    that's wildstyle, right there.
    werd.

    my birth in the early 80s places me at a unique position. although i missed the 8-track era, i have experienced the vinyl and audio cassette era (remember the hissing and no rewind buttons on walkmans?)...not to mention the genesis of the compact disc. all very cool mediums. as i'm aging however, i have this perception that old is good. i have a pretty stocked cd collection but i wanna have a vinyl library. it can get costly but it's an investment from my point of view.

    there's just something about vinyl...it's the static yet clear sounds...it's the album art and sleeves fullsize. it's the delicate care put forth toward storing and caring for a record. it's everything. where some of us place books we've read as trophies on our bookshelves, i put my music on the same pedestal. my dream to start building on a vinyl library will be reality when i get back from the trip and this turntable bridges the gap between the past and future.

    i started wondering why i never created my own website. it would have my daily thoughts, my own layout and maybe even some music. then it hit me...i do have my own website. it's not a full out site per se, but it's good enough for me. for years, i've been wanting to put some music on here for you to enjoy or at least gain some exposure to. until i get my own podcast (keep your eyes peeled, instensly), myflashfetish will have to do.

    bascially it's a free embedded player for your site where you can upload your own music. i can't say how long they'll be letting everyone use their services for "free" but i'll be keeping my fingers and toes crossed until that day.
    if you notice, i have the player embedded to the right margin of 'placebo' where my mugshot, links and archives can be found.

    i hope you enjoy my first playlist; just a few of my buttahs.

    last fall, i copped my first apple computer ever -- natasha: my iBook G4.
    since then, i've had no complaints.
    since then, i've taken my computer everyhere; from cross town to the grimiest of washrooms to the low-lit cubicles of the libraries scattered throughout my university's campus. it's an essential part of my life; always has been and always will be.

    now it's your turn.

    apple just released their updated version of my G4, 'cept that's the thing, it's not a G4. it comes in core duo.

    did you hear me? it has an intel processor but it's a mac! for all of you who are infatuated with windows and all that garbage, now you can live your pc lifestyle in a goregeous mac.

    the macbook is 5x faster than my iBook (which is pretty damn fast as is), has a built in iSight camera and is tweaked out with a 13" glossy widescreen. that's not it, though...best of all and aside from coming in the iconic apple glossy white, it now comes in apple black!

    black is the new white, you feel me?

    get yours today - it's an evil little notebook you'll be passionate about using.

    my kuya called to parlez. i really think he was just checking up on me; probably wondering if i'm still alive. anyhow we talked briefly about things and knowing that i'm in the middle of remodelling my room, he informed me of blik invader graphics at home depot.

    it took me a while to figure out what the hell he was talking about.

    are they stencils? wallpaper?

    paraphrasing, he answered:
    "naw, fool...they're decals! they're reuseable and they're extra fresh, boyeeeeeeeee!".

    my wall's a cool greyish-light blue tone so i'm still contemplating if i should throw these up. the adult in me asks "wwmd (what would martha do - as in stewart)?" but the kid in me; the juvenile exclaims, "those are sooooo dope. is you a sucka?".

    i think i'm gonna have a field day heading to home depot come this weekend.

    they also have keith haring wall graphics (!), giant robot stiks (!) plus barrel of monkey ones (!). but i can't help my affinity for the space invader jawns(!).

    homeboy colin (the man responsible for introducing me to blogging since the icq days/my highschool "outsiders" radio co-host) and i usually politic about what's fresh and what's not. this is often in regards to music. i mean he has the whole rock and indie scene covered with some serious knowledge about old school hip hop and 80's jawns. dude has some good taste. i rarely/close to never doubt his take on things; because frankly, it's usually good shit.

    here's the plug: colin recently started a branch to his blogging lifestyle where he rants on the latest music he thinks you, me and your sister's boyfriend's dogwalker's neighbour should listen to. find it here.

    i wanna do the same thing. sometimes, i wanna share what i feel is fresh; what's dope. whether it's music, the (next) latest gear to have or nutrition/good eats, you'll sporadically find it here on placebo. after all, this is my blog, right? i should and do have creative control. sure, i might be tooting my own horn but i really am the truth, believe it or not (please believe me. pretty please?!).

    in this first edition of 'fresh (what's next?)', on a sterling silver platter - i'd like to present to you lupe fiasco. some of you might've heard him on kanye's latest release, "touch the sky" from last year's late registration LP.

    well here's lupe coming out with his first solo attempt - and a successfully deadly first attempt, i might add. look out for his 'food and liquor' coming in june.
