california pt.3: a photo essay (the barong cashout)
it was october 17th, the second last day of our stay in the bay. we hit up a local plaza by my tita's crib complete with all the filipino fixins outside of the philippines you could ever want. there was chow king, and max's of manila. there was red ribbon and two barong and formal shops competing on opposite sides of the plaza.

we ended up grabbing lunch at chow king because dammit, i had to have me some chow king. everyone says jollibee but fuck jollibee, it's overrated. chow king is the joint. how should or would i know?
because mama dukes and pops told me so the last time they visited the philippines, that's why.

i had to indulge without burning a hole through my tito's wallet so i ordered the filipino spaghetti. being skeptical because we never eat filipino spaghetti here at my house, i had to try this weird dish that everyone was telling me about. think sweet tomato sauce, rather than savoury like the italians intended and think cut up hot dogs, not meatballs. there wasnt' the usual parmesan like i've been accustomed to over my past 25 years either; it was all about the shredded cheddar.

as a side beverage the honey calamansi was all i could ever want.

finally, i finished off with the king size halo-halo special. most definitely order that if ever in the bay area or philippines. tell 'em jay sent you.

i second thought hitting up red ribbon or even buying some chicken from max's for later.

instead, i ventured into this place.

the lady asked if i wanted to try anything on.
"if i try this on, for sure i'm gonna end up buying it. no thanks."

in the end...i tried it on....

...and in the end...i had myself a barong. it was the plaza and the food, and the filipinos. it was cali and i was filipino, i had to buy one. had to. it's grey and fades up. handsome detailing on the front and minor details everywhere else. my special barong undershirt was black.

it's gangsta.
marriages, first communions, bah mitzvahs, you name it, i'm gonna be all up in it.

california pt.1: where should i start?

it wasn't even about the bay area or the weather and the shopping, it was about family, first and foremost.

i don't get to see my cousins from california. on average it's roughly every 6 years. a whole lot happens in 6 years!
we arrived last thursday evening and from that point until the very last minute it was nothing but love.

we did haight street and union square for shopping; fisherman's wharf, pier 39 and a ton of restaurants. on top of all that there was nothing but eating day and night which explains my 10lb gain in weight. i didn't think it was possible but believe me, it's very possible especially when you have so many different filipino delights waiting for you each and every day.

abs asked me if i was homesick while i was there.
considering that my family minus my dad and my dog were with me, there really was no room to get homesick. in fact, now, i'm
"california-sick", if that even makes sense. i miss everything about that place on top of the fam. but as always, good things come to an end....or do they?

the cali fam is gonna try and make it up to canada this summer so hopefully, that falls through. the more i travel, the more it makes me realize that there's so much to see and do out there. sad as it may seem, toronto...mississauga....the whole works, although it brought me up, just seems like a small dot in comparison to all the things out there.

as stated previously, the more i leave, the more i don't want to stay. and the more i don't want to stay the fewer reasons im finding to actually stay here.

looking back, it's already coming up to a year that's gone by since backpacking thailand and laos. that's a year since i stated my manifesto to one day leave ontario, canada.
now that a year's passed, that leaves a current 6 years that i'm giving myself. whoa.
