donuts: ode to dilla pt.1

first read this: golden era (intro)


leading up to my birthday, to coincide with my presentation of hip hop's golden era, and how it has impacted the last 26 years of my life, every monday and friday will feature pieces on one of my favourite producers and musicians of all time - the legendary j dilla. he gave hip hop a soul.

being that february is the month of love and being that he passed away two years ago during this time, it's only right that i give kudos to him and look back at his contribution to hip hop in retrospect.

you're all probably wondering who the hell j-dilla/jay dee is and why i'm so obsessed with his work and his life. the fact of the matter is you not knowing who james "j dilla" yancey is, is precisely one of the reasons why he changed so many of our lives. as i present his work and how it has moved me, you're gonna start saying to yourself, "oh he did that....he was the dude behind that?"

the man was a pioneer, an innovator and a genius. he was the producer's favourite producer. however, during all of this time, he kept a low profile, kept his ego in check and always remained humble. it was never about him or his outfits or his mouth running about how he was the greatest (eventhough he easily could've). he never had his own clothing line, never wore gucci or designer frames. he never dated or married some beautiful songstress and he certainly wasn't about riding off the street credibility of getting shot or slanging crack - it was always and will always be about his art. he kept it true to himself and he did it for the love.

dilla is not a franchise, institution or brand name.
dilla is love.

"stakes is high" references the demised state of hip hop. this song is more than a decade old, yet it holds true moreso today, than it did back then.
