the golden era (intro)
music has been such a vital element in my life. i don't wanna sound corny and tell you how much it's moved me over the years but i love music almost obsessively. the first beat we've all heard dates back to our mother's heartbeat while in term. since then, the radiowaves, music videos and live shows have continued to comfort us and stimulate the grey matter in our heads .

looking back, i'm pretty thankful that mom and dad saturated my house with sounds from the platters, simon and garfunkel, neil diamond and many other favourites that surrounded their 'golden era'. filipino folk was a constant contender for soundwave control in our household just the same. then you have my two older brothers with their own lust for what's now deemed 'classic rock' - such as kiss, ac/dc, guns'n'roses and further the new wave era, funk, punk and anything that rattled a chevette trunk. my second oldest in command always has and always will have an affinity for house, soul, a bit of new jack and jazz. all of these influences, simply put, are what have and continue to keep me inspired through my daily jaunts through life.

being that my 26th birthday is fast-approaching, i felt it'd be important to take you on a musical journey through the golden era of hip hop. it's sad to admit but hip hop today has regressed. it lacks the creativity, self-expression and political power as a social tool for change that it used to when i was a youth. i frown at the future of this artform and wonder if it really is limited to a juvenile genre (you can't wear baggy jeans forever...at least i hope not). but i guess that's just part of growing up...bitching and moaning about the "good ol' days" comes with the territory. but just because i'm over the "quarter-life" landmark and just because the number "26" doesn't even look right to my eyes when i write it on paper, don't for a second think that my joints are beginning to creak; i'm not even at my peak yet; real life with real-world problems and of course, real-world success is just starting. so from here until i blow out the candles, take special note on how and why i'll always have a special place in my life for hip hop culture and sound.

tune in daily and get your ipods ready.

["rockit" - herbie hancock]
funny how the first song to turn me onto hip hop lacked vocals and wasn't even a hip hop song per se; it was jazz genius, herbie hancock's doing and forward-thinking back when i was....5?
