6 'till frisco
my flight will be departing during the second week of october at some point. big brother booked it and although i don't know the exact details, best believe, it's booked.

the fam will be heading down for my aunt's 80th birthday. we're gonna surprise her by showing our canadian mugs and hopefully she doesn't get too surprised at that age, 'know what i'm saying? i'm just playing, i really do miss the family down there though. it's been roughly 7 years since we last visited and although that might not seem that long to me, at least when compared to the fact that i haven't visited the philippines in 18 years, it still feels pretty long.

i'm looking forward to seeing everyone, not just my aunt. i'm looking forward to seeing my cousin jay, who's in the navy and still in one piece, alive, i'm looking forward to seeing my cousin lyn and her husband and her two kids who i've never met. i'm looking forward to seeing everyone (i'll stop the name calling before this turns into romper room)!

aside from that, i have roughly a week (for now) to check out what i need to check out before heading back up here. even in that time period, it's not like i'll be able to check out everything; filipinos visiting family is a long and lengthy tradition dating back to when we rocked loin cloths and spears, so you know that'll be taking up a large portion of my time.

some choice things i'd like to peep now that i'm older and actually understand the value of seeing new places:

  • an alcatraz night tour
    starting at roughly $30 USD, you jump on a ferry tour at dusk only to catch the sun setting beyond the golden gate bridge. you arrive at the prison in your group led by your guide and headset. pretty cool. you hear stories about those who served time, ghost stories, the island's military history, a handful of seminar vignettes (e.g. al capone) and so much more. sounds pretty damn good and for a mere 30 bucks. how can i complain?

    considering it'll be early fall, i'll pretend like i'm eastwood in escape from alcatraz and rock a beanie and peacoat. i'll even make his squinted face while there.

    now...if only i can find some paper mache. shit.

  • imagery depicted in grand theft auto: san andreas the video game (just because)
    haight street
    where all the hippies used to chill out in the 60s. think long hair and VW minibuses, sex and drugs. of course, it's changed since then, but what the hell is there now? from what i hear, it's vintage shops, exclusive boutiques, coffee shops and internet cafes. nice.

    chinatown
    hyped as "the largest chinatown outside of asia", and featured in the black eyed peas' "joints and jams" before they started to suck, chinatown is a place i'd love to jaunt through. shoot, let's make a point to grab some dim sum while we're at it. no doubt.

    lombard street
    one of the most famous streets on earth, lombard is an east-west street that's gatdamn crooked. i plan on driving along that like i plan on sticking a fork in my eye. i'll walk it, thank you.

  • GRSF
    giant robot has been one of my favourite publications since highschool! asian pop culture, art and beyond is something they've stayed true to since the beginning. shoot, i still go back and read issues from their first year of publication. don't believe me? peep my ikea billy bookcase next time you're in my room. my editions stay crisp.

    during the years i've been reading, i noticed that they've opened up stores in S.F., L.A., and NYC. whoooooa nelly! i'll definitely be making efforts to visit grsf and grny. gotta.
    they have gear, toys, art galleries and so much other stuff that i'm sure i don't know about. grab your copy of giant robot now! jay said so (moment of senseless pluggage ends here).

  • fisherman's wharf
    your basic stereotypical scene from the bay. take two handfuls of street perfomer, a dash of crabbing, and two tablespoons of good eats and you'll have fisherman's wharf - a nice place to just chill out and shoot the shit.

  • shopping downtown
    i love going downtown to toronto, but shoot, as i remember the last time i went, downtown san fran killed it. there were people on the streets making electronic music right in front of my face, wide ass lanes, independent book shops, record shops and gear peddlers. they had the diesel store, a puma store, the biggest banana republic and of course, good food. a man needs sustenance while doing all this walking!!! powel, union square or even chestnut, i need to be all up in it.

    now i know this list is pretty extensive and ambitious at the same time but i'd like to hit at least two things while there. i simply write down goals so i have something to actually work towards. it's a little something i've come to practice and preach as a trainer. being a lingering thought in your mind just doesn't cut it nowadays.

    • awesome list!!! it was too bad i didn't get to spend more time in SF to experience all the cool stuff on your list. i really wanted to take that tour to alcatraz but i guess it'll have to wait til next time. i also wanted to bike across the golden gate bridge :o) but that might not be a good idea in october weather. but then again, you're canadian, so you should be able to handle the cold ;o) i only got a glimpse of lombard as i rode the trolley to fisherman's wharf and on the cab ride back to the hotel. anyway, have an awesome time!!! i was amazed at how steep those hills were! crazzzzyyyy...
