the perfect day: 25
i wake up in the morning and the sun blazes through my drapes. i set my iTunes playlist to party shuffle mode and for some reason, only the best of my very best tracks play in sequence. i jump in the shower and thereafter, i crack open a fresh pack of those overly priced gilette sensor excel razor heads to use. applying just the right amount of shaving gel, i proceed to give myself a perfect shave - no rush, no bumps, no cuts, no redness. i iron my shirt and trousers for work, and realize that there's no need to use a lint brush on my blazer. time is money here, kids and time is on my side this morning.

i head downstairs to join mom for breakfast where i'm greeted with a birthday hug from her and a birthday soulbrother handshake from pops. there's no need for big breakfasts with those assortmed jams and syrups, flapjacks and juices - i have a green tea and instant oatmeal; there's no other. as mom reads her morning filipino paper, i stare at my smooth bowl of oats and brown sugar smiling and looking back at the past 24 years.

after brushing, i throw my loafers on, jump in the car and head workbound. dilla donuts bump as the perfect soundtrack to my day. what a treat. the streets are clean and the snow's actually starting to melt. there's no traffic or road rage on my radar. i get to work and everyone gives me mad love, wishing me happy 25th; even the purolator guy gives me daps.

my manager soon arrives and surprises me with a cake! they bought me a huge ill cake!!! i quickly learn that hazlenuts and chocolate frosting are a good thing once in a while. lunch time swings around and i purposely haven't packed a lunch today. i hit up one of those chinese chains from manchu and order a bowl of noodles. long noodles for long life is a superstitious thing that even i, the most unsuperstitious filipino has to smirkingly observe.

a close friend calls me at work all the way from philippines. we talk for a few and catch up. we talk weather, him needing canadian hair gel and hot weather. later that day, my co-worker buys me a lime italian soda from second cup and my usual dry throated dehydration is weaned off for the remainder of the shift. my kuya also calls me at work to well-wish me and talk for a bit. i head home and get the happy birthday treatment again from my family, including my other brother who has now arrived from work. he has good news about my sofa bed going on sale (keep your eyes peeled for green tweed...). before answering a birthday telegram phone call from handsome colin and other friends, i open my placebo comments, facebook wall postings, myspace messages, and email greeting cards to read and witness the love around me (thanks to all, again. little things are big deals.).

emily rings me up and confirms our dinner plans. we eat like royalty and for some reason, the corny, lame-ass jokes of our waiter seem to just have me playing along and rolling with his dry humour (it's usually not the case with obnoxious wait staff). we start with the usual appetizer fair - flatbreads with goat cheese sides, roasted garlic and chutneys coupled with some spinach dip and red corn chips. she gets the kalbi meatloaf and i get the portabello chicken. both are buttah. we finish with a white chocolate cheesecake and some italian gelato. superb.

we head home and i change into my favourite adidas trackpants and soft cotton tee before crashing on the couch to some fight network on the tube. being as it's a k-1 wednesday, i watch a 2002 replay of the tournament from nagoya, japan before retiring for the night. i turn on my iTunes again and listen to the euphoric sounds of roy hargrove jazz upon knocking out.

it's a perfect day.
