300 is all hype
so i went with my brothers to catch 300 last night. it was pretty good but not all that. if it was all that i'd list this post under my rate well category. instead, i'm left here with an empty void unfilled by the movie. for months i've seen the ads for 300. for weeks, i've heard that the movie is a "must see" but personally, i didn't think it was all that. it's interesting what hype can do.

sure, i can appreciate the movie aesthetically, but i ask, these days are we only called upon or expected to appreciate films simply for their aesthetics? if that's the case, turn off the volume next time you rent a movie and just stare at the images. i could've done that at the book store or art gallery. c'mon now, watching a movie in the theatre isn't cheap in north america -- if i'm gonna pay 10 canadian bucks and more at some places, the least you can do is give me a good 2 hours of pleasure while i'm sitting there gazing at the screen. i work gatdamn hard for my money. although "sin city" and "300" are adaptations of frank miller graphic novels, do not think they are the same thing simply because they were shot in similiar fashions. i can honestly say that i loved "sin city"; there were plots, sub plots, character development and of course the all-star cast. "300" on the other hand is...well....300. i won't ruin it for you. i did expect more, is all i wanted to say.

who knows....maybe my tastes in film are evolving. if that's the case, then that's a good thing.
don't get me wrong, it's worth checking out for all it's aesthetic glory but not worth a dvd buy, i feel.
save your cash and stay home, buy a bag of chips and watch your toenails grow. that's a beautful thing. instead i suggest that you go cop frank miller's graphic novel 300; throw it on your desk or coffee table and let others know that you're above the hype.

  • yea Mark and I saw it last night..and I agree wit ya. It wasn't all that, but the fighting scenes were crazy tho..I just didn't like the fact that even with all the bloody mess, none of it got onto the spartans lol..and when the blood hit the ground, it would disappear! hahaha
