here i go talkin' about those smells again.

whenever i leave the house to go clubbing or lounging or bar hopping or just shooting the shit and grabbing a coffee, it's usually the case that one of my boys comes to get me. it's usually the case that whenever we pick eachother up, we take a whif of how the other dude smells - in the event that we happen to tangle with some females that night. sometimes we get approval, other times, we don't. james is one of those boys; my homie.

there was this one time when i left the house and my mom was cooking something. no matter how much body spray i had on or how fast i zoomed from my enclosed bedroom to the outside door, some of that something made it's presence known on my clothes or hair or skin. it was most likely that smell that a lot of filipino households have - sauteed garlic and onions (it's a spanish colonial thing, you wouldn't understand). james could smell me once i got into his civic hatchback. "dude, you smell like ulam".
"word?"
"yea man."
"my bad. oh well".
"that's ok though...that shows you come from a good home".

words of wisdom from my man.
james martinez, i like your style.

going out that night was no biggie. the smells fade eventually and nobody knows who smells like what unless you're taking company back to the crib or heading to her place. besides, if i did happen to smell the smell of sauteed garlic then who knows - maybe the filipino girls in that place might have an affinity for me. could you imagine that? a flock of pinays sniffing me out through the crowd like bloodhounds.

God bless brown skin.

  • a friend of mine and i cooked adobo one time in college before watching a movie (actually he cooked, i ate) and all throughout the movie the adobo smell was creeping out of our clothes onto the noses of our unsuspecting fellow (white) moviegoers (this was in Maine). ;o)
