at work this past weekend a customer, his son and his wife were all looking for new gear at the store. son is going to italy for some kind of poly-sci exchange program for 6 months and they needed my help to stock him up for the latest in linens and all that white and creamy colored comfortable riviera nonsense. i tried and tried to help the boy but instead ended up getting into a conversation with his dad about travelling. one thing led to another and he gave me some pointers concerning my trip to se asia - because everyone's a pro. nonetheless, i appreciated his input and will keep them in mind when heading over.

(1) the heat
i keep getting this but can't really put myself in that situation until i get there. i understand it's tropical but really, what's tropical? i'm not in for a rude awakening but thinking tropical or trying to remember how hot the philippines was when i visited 17 years ago just ain't happening.

(2) use your head over there
no sharing any drugs and definitely no sex with the prostitutes or strangers for that matter. the last thing i want after hearing this customer's anecdote is to end up having my parents come over from canada only to pull my ass out of a jail or asylum. beyond that, im not planning on bringing back that many souvenirs -- especially an STD or four.

(3) watch eachother's back
i'm heading over with colin so far but i think 3 would be optimal. two is fine but 3 would be perfect. there are a lot of scams over there and who knows what people will do to get your cash.

(4) money belt
i need one of these just like i need to be packing my digital camera a nano and a credit card. i'll sleep in my underwear with my money belt strapped to me.

(5) deet
better pack the bug repellent; asian bugs are giant creatures - especially in the jungle; shoot, theyre everywhere.

(6) credit and debit
i was filled in on how my debit card works internationally. i still need to get a credit card. a little cash and my plastic is key.

(7) needles
i need to get my shots or at least consult with a doctor soon about what kind of shots i'm gonna need to be getting before heading over. malaria, hepatitis, worms....whatever it is, it isn't fun.

(8) act local
okay, i might physically fit in with my dark ass skin and what not but i'm still not local. no high rolling, either. politeness is always good especially when your in someone else's country. respect the rules, laws and customs.

(9) the basics
pack light and pack right. all im gonna need are my flip flops, a good pair of hiker's, underwear, shorts, t-shirts and maybe one good hoodie or long sleeve. sunblock, bug spray, foot powder and deodorants are essential business too.

(10) a journal
we all know i love to write and recite. i've personally taken it upon myself to bring a journal when i go. a month is a long time to live in a foreign place. i'll try and log a lot and who knows....maybe i'll even post some on here.
