i often wonder how the future will be for me. and when i talk "the future" i mean the future - the wife, the kids, the dog, the house, the supernaturally green lawn and of course, the bills.

i often envision myself in my den (like builders even put "dens" in homes nowadays - imma bring it back, you feel me?!) listening to music; records, tapes, cds or even digital formats. no headphones, just loud speakers. the den will be soundproof.

but what will i be listening to?
house, jazz, soul and funk will be on the roster of course, but hip hop will be the meat and potatoes of what will be going through my ears believe it or not.

a lot of you might think that hip hop is or should be a phase; something that only adolescents who wear a pair of jeans 3 sizes too big for their waists listen to. i think the opposite. i know the polar opposite actually. sure there's a lot of bullshit out there right now but at the same time there are the artists out there that you don't hear about. and aside from that there are the classics. the golden age of the culture: 1993-1997 and the pioneers of the old school. dare we forget the mid to late 80s just the same?
that's half the pleasure - actually searching for and finding the gems.

working the monotonous job that i've been doing for the past few weeks has given me the opportunity to really listen to hip hop music and the virtuosity that producers put behind their beats. listening to the likes of madlib, pete rock and dilla -- it's not hard to see the efforts they put towards such intricate sounds. dilla's use of drums and pete's use of horns - the music is an artform.

i want my speakers to be bumping these sounds in the future. i want my wife to come barging into my den; shake her head; roll her eyes; smirk and give me that wild look in the eye like i'm some kind of crazed idiot who she can't believe that she fell in love with (must be the tongueplay).

she'll say "jay, you're such a weirdo".

that's what i want.

the drum kicks hurt...the horns - they blast...and the snares.....don't even get me started with the snares.
it's passé to say it but most of today's music is disposable.
my brand of hip hop is timeless.

ward cleaver had his own den. if hip hop ever entered his life, would june cleaver say all of the above to ward?

  • she'd say that and much more.

hell maybe even saying, "i need a beat".

we think alike man. a music den. where children can pass by and learn about the golden age of hip hop amongst other good vibes.

let me hand off the hip hop essentials to you sometime. 12 discs of gold. 79-91.
    booya.
