one of the things i can appreciate about being without parent right now is my ability to do my own grocery shopping. sure, i tag along with my mom when she dishes out the cash, but that's the thing, it's her cash, not mine. i can only provide my nurtitional knowledge to such an extent but when it comes to flavours, mom rarely fucks around; she sticks to what works. it takes a lot of convincing on my part to get her to buy hot sauces, pickled hot and sweet mangoes, century eggs and especially curries. this is mainly due to the fact that my dad is like any filipino dad who has come to canada - he thinks anything not filipino is bullshit. he thinks the slightest hint of any kind of herb or foreign spice is "pakistani" and he just won't have it. oh well, that's my dad -- racist or not, i still gotta love the guy for coming through to raise and feed his kids.

today i noticed we were running low on dog food and dish detergent. having the day off, i took it upon myself to do some banking, deposit some cash & pay some bills for the house, hit up the asian supermarket for some groceries and thereafter, the "white" supermarket for anything "white" - i.e. abrasive cleaners, rye bread and bryer's mint chocolate chip ice cream.

about the asian market...
if i had the time, i'd probably stay in there the whole day. it's the equivalent of a record or book store to me, 'cept i can actually eat the products. from korean to chinese, thai to vietnamese, filipino to indian -- there are just too many products for me to choose from. eventually, i came out with ingredients for a red curry, ingredients for a green curry, 1 giant asian eggplant, a pack of snowpeas on special, fresh basil, 3 avocadoes, giant prawns and a bag of shrimp chips.

me and brother are gonna eat gewwwwd this weekend.

  • mc donald's and timmy's? ewwwwww. when say we're gonna eat good, i mean home cooked meals -- my curries, caldereta, spaghetti with clam sauce and avocado smoothies. that's what i'm talkin' bout!

mickey d's is reserved for post clubbing/post bar outtings if the all night chinese joints are a no-no for the group.

  • mcdonald's sandwiches i could see, but sandwiches from tim horton's are nasty.

well at least they are here in ontario. stale as stale can be with minimal condiments and portions given.

never had a good sandwich there.

home cooked is where its at. mcd's is for the poor student. chinese is for after a hangover. street meat is for anything after hours downtown.

nothing says good times like a good case of Norwalk and salmonella.
