once again, somehow, a leaked version of an album happened to fall out of the sky and into my lap. this time it was lupe fiasco's 'food and liquor'. i really can't explain it -- either God is sprinkling bootlegs in the area or a fedEx plane has some serious rust on it's shell.

on the flip side, during my break at work yesterday, i happened to stroll into hmv at the mall. surprisingly, they started selling madlib's 'beat konducta'. of course...i bought it.

here are the reviews:

lupe fiasco's 'food and liquor'
i already told you lupe's what's next and that was on the basis of his performances on "kick push" and ye's "touch the sky". damn, i scare myself in how right i can be. lupe's rhymes aren't technically supreme but he's more than decent. lupe himself even says "’[the album is] less of me trying to showcase my skills as an emcee and more about where I come from and really touches on issues I feel are valid". i guess that's why i'd even consider listening to this album; it's real. the beats span from dark and electrified funk to smooth chicago soul with help all over the album from the likes of jay-z to mike shinoda to of course - kanye. something to bang out of your ride for the summer. standout track: #2 "sunshine" (i don't know the actual track name because bootlegs don't come with tracklistings)

[lupe fiasco]

madlib's 'beat konducta vol. 1-2'
i actually purchased this one so don't hate and call me a fulltime music pirate. i needed it for my collection. like j dilla's donuts, this is another stonesthrow camp instrumental album. like donuts, there are 30+ tracks with each track lasting 1 or 2 minutes but never going over 3. did that make sense? reread if necessary. madlib samples, tweaks and recreates his favourite motion picture soundtrack, soul and hip hop sounds for your aural pleasure. although not on the level of dilla's 'donut's this album is still above average and deserving of a listen to those who can appreciate good production. remember, no vocals or rhymes so for those of you scared about 'the brothas' in hip hop and their message, this album will be to your liking - rocker, cowboy or hip hopper. a perfect companion for dilla 'donuts'. standout track: #5 "tape hiss (dirty)"
