last night was my cousin's engagement party. just a little get together - you know the deal; a real shindig between families. it was real cozy and intimate at my tito and tita's house up in hamilton. about to have dinner and in the midst of mingling with friends and family, my ninong (godfather) pulls me aside out of practically nowhere to tell me that im to do the toast. i have no clue why he chose me. i mean, i wouldn't consider me and him that tight; we only see eachother once or twice a year. after seconds of fumbling awkwardly around the dining room table and declaring "i can't do the toast, i have no glass yet", i ended up being the "toastman" for the night.

eyes on me and camcorders cued, i did my thing.
"i'd like to propose a toast to alex and christine. i wanna wish them nothing but good luck and happiness in their future together. cheers."

it was real simple and off the top of my head. i mean you can't expect anything too deep from me toasting to my cuz. we are both busy guys and see eachother on a bi-yearly basis (once a year if we're lucky). all in all, it was pretty cool. one of the perks of being toastman was that i got first dibs on eating.

when i sat down with my family again to eat, i was the brunt of the jokes. where i was known in the past as being the "barfman" due to barfing in the parking lot after a great italian buffet during my mom's birthday about 10 years ago, i am now also known as the "toastman" -- the main man for any special occassion that requires a raising of glassware.

maybe i should carry a little black book with pre-meditated words, famous quotes and words of wisdom and well-being. i'd divide it into weddings, birthdays, deaths and awards.

toastman - the life of the party; the guy all the guys wish they were and the guy the girls wish they had.
toastman - everyone loves him.

over and out,
toastman 2006 'till infinity
