r.i.p. dilla

today is a sad day for hip hop.
sitting here listening to my bootlegged copy of 'donuts' and the mastermind behind the album, it's not hard to understand, with all the half assed lyricism and mediocre production of today, how artists like j-dilla keep the culture fresh and me second guessing whether or not hip hop is truly a lost cause.

upon wanting to continue my "favourite hip hop producers of RIGHT NOW", i was doing some background checking on jay dee. unfortunately, i found some sad news - dilla passed away today. although i've only come to know his music for about a year now, i can say that he's one of the most brilliant producers (hip hop or non-hip hop for that matter) i've heard.

dilla has worked with hip hop legends - madlib, the pharcyde, slum village, a tribe called quest and common to name a few. he's pharrell's favourite producer and a pioneer responsible for putting detroit's hip hop scene on the map. as pharrell said, "[dilla's] a drum god".

he released 'welcome to detroit' a few years back, and just a few days ago, released his long awaited 'donuts' album that i've been hyping on here for the past several weeks. mind you, a large chunk of 'donuts' was made while hospitalized over the past year while jay was sick. friends and family brought in records and machines enabling jay do do what he doest best.
i was going to write some more background information, but i think you'd be better off experiencing j-dilla through his sound.

with that said, get dilla's donuts now. the album is my daily joy.
