yesterday a customer with what i can only decipher as ocd (obsessive compulsive disorder) came into the store. with every shirt that appealed to him in the store - he had to rub his hand on the shirt, smell that hand quickly and then raise that same hand to eye level beside his head. this was repeated for every shirt he considered, which was about 20 or 40 times, easily. to me, it seemed like a ritual way too demanding for my personal lifestyle; i had to pity the guy. imagine having to go through life like that? by the way, dude spent a good 35 mintues in the fitting room with one shirt. that's not a judgement, i'm just saying.

he asked my coworkers and myself if we sell shirts in individual packages. at first response, i had to think to myself, "holy crap, mr. queen mother! these shirts aren't magazines or collector's items...shirts wrapped in plastic and untouched...ha!". after that, the idea hit me - all ocd aspects aside, this guy was a genius. it dawned upon me that shirts should be wrapped. on display we should have the odd one or two 'demos' on hangers for each size. on shelves, we should have decks or trays of shirts in plastic wrap. now i'm not talking the flimsy plastic wrap or saran wrap that you get your 2-pack pair of fruit of the looms in, im talking crispy plastic with a reflective, shiny, metallic/foil backing. now that would be class. that's aesthetics. im not demanding that every store do this, rather, im demanding that every so-called "high end" boutique does this.

for my clothing store (God forbid i ever open a retail store for clothing after all is said and done - studying human movement) i would implement such packaging in my products. pants? maybe glass cases or suspended in gelatin encased ing glass. yes, that's it! then againk not really; i still have to figure out pants as they are on a different level all together. but for shirts, this only makes sense. you get your gear pre-packaged like a gas-station sandwich; this ensures freshness and an assuring mentality for the customer that "this shirt came straight from sweatshop onto my sweaty back". it's also easier at the end of the day for the staff - no clean up required. it all sounds weird to you but trust me, it'll all make sense after you see the light. in closing, i would just like to thank that man with ocd who came in yesterday. although you made us steam your shirt before you left, and package it in a garment designated for suits, i appreciated your presence and your display of non-conformity to what society demands of you and me. you take it that extra mile, big fella. if i ever open up my own store with futuristic-themed aesthetics and displays, you'll be given an employee discount.

einstein has nothing on you, jack - shirts that are plastic wrapped. brilliant.
