when i first started at york, it was shit. or at least those were my first thoughts. everyone from surrounding universities here knock york - with their prejudiced beliefs. there's no denial, those tshirts from the university of toronto stating "friends don't let friends go to york" got a slight chuckle or two from me. in all honesty though, outside opinions impact personal thinking whether you like to tell yourself they do or not. i admit, york wasn't my first choice of habitat that i had in mind. to tell you the truth, when in highschool, i wanted to go to brock university because of their co-op program for kinesiologists. for whatever reason, i didn't get in so opted for york (my 2nd choice) as default. i got into toronto too, btw - so yea...to you u of t students (my arch rivals), blow me (although i might be applying to more school there in the future).

4, really 5, years later, here i am graduating from york university as a kinesiologist. i must say, the school has been through a lot of growth since i started there back in 2001. facilities, the people, the energy, it's all changed. but i'm not about to get all sentimental with school pride just yet - i'll save all of that for a later date coming up.

i am here to talk about my bread and butter however - kinesiology. the school of kinesiology and health science is a place that i've been honoured to call home for the duration of my undergrad life. after 5 years, the school becomes a part of you. i'm not gonna lie, it's been a bumpy road and a simple explanation from me about how bumpy it's actually been wouldn't do justice to it's reality. for the good and the bad times, i'm grateful for the experience, knowledge and growth the school has given me. for these reasons it's no wonder why i'm overjoyed at hearing the extension and growth of the school itself.

this past december, the university's board of governors voted yes to establishing a new faculty of health for the next school year and beyond. although i won't be a part of the new faculty which will merge the school of kinesiology, nursing, psychology and health policy & management, i tip my hat off to it's administrators, student body and teachers. truth be told, we're getting stronger, whether you like it or not. not just the school, but more specifically the field of health, overall.

what does this all mean? it means growth and opportunities from each faculty to learn from one another under the same umbrella. don't start getting scared however, because you will still get your degree designations such as a BA, BSc, BHS, BScN, MA, and phDs - so don't cry over your delicate titles here. more importantly however, this means a great deal to the future of canadian society. we've all heard the stats on the news and how the senior population is aging and more people are getting obese - it's only of benefit that this faculty and its future grads will be.

i really wanted to say more on this topic of a new health faculty, but i think this post got a tad too detailed for my own good.
oh well, i could've just said "new health faculty at york" to begin with, but that'd be just wack and understated.

who knows?...maybe one day, i'll be teaching under this faculty.
i hope york and i have had a symbiotic relationship.

did i impact the field as much as it did me? only time can really tell.

i wish nothing but good luck to the health faculty at york university.

  • in high school, representatives from york were at our college fair. we found it funny a canadian university would come all the way to a public school in brooklyn to recruit. of course, i wanted to break away from everyone and go (far) away for school, so i took a brochure.
