today was the rematch between manny pacquiao and erik morales.
if you didn't know, manny's a filipino. a filipino from a southern region of the motherland more south than my dad's hood (if that was even possible).

who?
pops, brother mark, me...a portugese bar owner and crowd...a handful of mexicans..some black dudes with white girls...and other filipinos - old and young.

what?
a super featherweight match shown on pay-per-view but being that ppv is too overated through our eyes, we had to catch the fight. a filipino's fight...why would we miss that? besides, honey garlic chicken wings, some fries and gravy and a pitcher among brothers and father; this is called male bonding.

when?
tonight...roughly the past 4 hours of pre-fights and main event.

where?
in vegas - but we caught it at a local bar. basically, two or three blocks from my house in the heart of old mississauga - where apartment buildings of the 70's are undergoing a 'gettofication' of sorts.

why?
last march, in another blog and through another post, i briefed some of you about the first time we watched the match between manny and erik. sadly, manny lost by way of decision. this fight was manny's chance to renew himself and our pride as a nation.

how?
he did it. he won tonight. by beating erik in the 10th by way of knockout.
GOD BLESS YOU, MANNY.

the fight was good, the crowd was good and the sweet science behind it all was perfect. manny didn't disappoint this time. i said he had to be more aggressive and i guess his camp saw that too - no doubt about it. the first couple rounds had my heart sink as erik morales set the pace. at several points, he even had manny running. by the 4th round, it all changed and manny took control. it was like a dance with manny leading. on top of throwing and landing more shots, manny had what i call more "meaningful" shots; heavy and damaging.

if there's no snap then it's nothing but wack.

by the 9th manny had the credits rolling and by the 10th and after a knockdown, manny iced erik. it was poetry in motion.

now the philippines has yet another victorious son otherwise known as a hero to prop their chins up high.
let's just hope we can stay modest. there are way too many cocky filipinos at present time. we best not start ego trippin'.

be cool my kababayan until their third and decisive meeting.

manny, you were golden.

  • a filipino friend of mine and i watched it, via pseudo-satellite [ie a webcam set up in the philippines broadcasting it to my computer and the tv volume blasting so it'll transmit clear enough all the way from pilipinas to maine, all thanks to skype]. ANG GALING. poetry in motion, it was indeed.

    when's the third fight?

  • im unsure. it has yet to be decided...but it was part of their fight contract. i don't know if you heard last nite during the post fight interview with morales, but he said doesnt feel he can drop to 130lbs ever again (as he did last nite). he also stated how "tired [he] was" of boxing. shoot, i'd be tired too if manny gave me the beating he gave manny last nite too.

that's a fine tuned site you got there jo anne..thanks for visiting. come again, by all means.
