for those of you who thought hip hop was just a bunch of black guys rhyming and doing really immature arm gestures, spinning on their heads and wearing baggy gear and gold chains, this is for you.

for years i've always loved hip hop; i really couldn't explain why. the culture, it's poets, it's art, it's dancing - it was something that i connected with naturally. it's not like i wanted to be black or anything - hip hop just grew on my like a fungus; i really can't explain how or why. as of late, i've seriously made an effort to actively listen to hip hop's music - specifically its intricacies of sampling, looping, beatmaking or whatever you wanna call it.

in a 6 part segment over the next couple of weeks, i plan on showcasing my favourite hip hop producers AS OF RIGHT NOW. hopefully after reading these, you'll consider buying their music, listening to more hip hop (actively and with a greater appreciation), and checking out their live shows.

sure, some of you might say "aww man, jay didn't even mention so-and-so" or "what's he talkin' bout? dude's beats are wack"..and to tell you the truth, you might be right - but this is my blog and these are my favourites...AS OF RIGHT NOW (currently - so don't start whining about how i didn't include premier, the rza, prince paul or dre -- because they are part of my 'all time favourites' list, i assure you).

kev brown
kev brown is not from l.a., n.y., philly, chi-town or even detroit for that matter; he's from maryland - which is an unexpected habitat of hip hop production. if you've listened to jazzy jeff's the magnificent LP, then you'll be familiar with mr. brown on tracks such as "shake it off" and "know ur hood". unfortunately, that's the extent of a bio that you're gonna get from me. instead, i'll let you know what i like about kev's beats.

first, his beats are smooth - sorta like hot chocolate with marshmallows smooth. when you put your headphones on, you can really feel a signature groove behind his music. in fact, i should mention, kev is a protege of two hip hop legends - pete rock and jazzy jeff (yes, jazz from fresh prince). kev, like his mentors, can really flip a jazz record from a sample of 3 bars or less. he's crazy.

this past fall, kev brown released his debut LP i do what i do. enough of me yapping though. to kick this series off right, i suggest you peep the "video" section of link below fully and then listen to it's finished product (also in the link).

if you never believed hip hop could grow up, then you were wrong. these are the sounds of tomorrow's vintage.

before you go!!...it's important that you peep the 'video' section of
