dilla: the slum village years
one of the most slept on albums back in the mid 90s was slum village's fantastic (volumes 1 and 2!!!). during this time, i think the gang from detroit were at their finest points especially when backed by dilla. if you listen carefully through dilla's years, he kept on changing his approach to sound. regardless of the different permutations that his work went through, it always, as stated previously, had that soulful feel. i'm at a loss for words when trying to explain it.


the sound during dilla's SV run was slow and lazy and jazzed out contrasted with an infectious thump of dilla's drums. crazy times. above i've posted a youtube video of darkness (you're not imagining a dark screen, it really is just a sound bite) featuring slum village's "fall in love" - one of my favourite slum tracks ever. period. enjoy. in addition, above, i've linked a nice remix to this classic done by a current favourite outfit'o'mine known as flying lotus. check it out and see how a sample, flipped by dilla later became flipped by another genius. it's all about innovation and keeping the sound dynamic.
